September 3, 2026

Co-financed and produced by Stadium, a North American production company part of the AOI Pro. Group, the Ukraine war documentary “Black Sunflowers” (dir. James Marcus Haney) is set to make its world premiere on September 11th at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Two-time Academy Award-winner for Best Actor and humanitarian activist Sean Penn joins the project as an executive producer.

About ‘Black Sunflowers’

The feature-length documentary was produced by filmmaker James Marcus Haney in collaboration with a local Ukrainian film crew.

From a military truck driver drifting in the streets of his hometown and a soldier with a prosthetic leg dancing freely on the rave floor, to one woman shifting from nature to war photography amidst the ruins of war, and another facing conscription and rifle training, Haney captures the lives of those caught up in the conflict. Oscillating between active combat and daily civilian life, the film presents a vivid multi-protagonist narrative of the struggles of young people in their twenties, showing their resilience in the face of harsh conditions.

About the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

Held in Canada every September, TIFF is the largest film festival in North America. Alongside those in Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, it ranks among the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The winners of the festival’s top honor, the ‘People’s Choice Award,’ which is decided by an audience vote, often go on to become leading contenders for the subsequent year’s Academy Awards. The festival therefore draws intense interest from the global film industry and major media outlets as ‘the most important precursor to the Oscars.’
